Strauss Actor Shonice Saint-Jean

My first experience occurred last year. It was the Sister Act auditions and a few of my cast-mates from Dreamgirls sent out a group message about auditioning for the production.  I had never seen or heard of Strauss Theatre since I’m not from Monroe, and I wasn’t prepared. It was such short notice, but I had a feeling I should go. Once I got there, I encountered such a welcoming atmosphere. Everyone was so nice!  So, my friends and I auditioned to be in the show.

The process was fun, and the dance routine were my favorite part, the choreographer was so loving, fun, and laid back we all connected instantly with her. A few days after auditions, I got the call along with three of my closest friends that we were chosen to be a part of Sister Act. Little did we know this was a blessing in disguise, and that this production would launch us forward and further in the world of theater.

The cast of Sister Act started as total strangers but ended up becoming a family. We all were of different ages, ethnicity, and backgrounds. However, our love for people and our passion for art connected each of us. Sometimes, I sit back and laugh at the many things that occurred backstage, it was truly an amazing experience and a dynamic production.

After it was over, I was sad because I had spent weeks bonding and making new friends with these talented people and did not want to leave. The whole staff at Strauss was friendly, and we became close. Little did I know that the fun never stops at Strauss. We all continue to be connected via social media, and sometimes go to Applebees for karaoke night.

Our love and passion for Art kept us coming back and auditioning, and it’s always refreshing to see new and old faces each time I go. My whole experience at Strauss taught me never to be afraid of a crowd, and to stop hiding my gifts. I’ve also learned that no matter how big or small your role is, you are still an essential part of the production. It takes everyone to build the masterpiece.

Shonice plays the part of Sheila in Murder at Cafe’ Noir.  If you don’t have your tickets for this Dinner Theatre don’t hesitate to call our box at 318-323-6681.  Performance dates are November 8, 9, 10.
