We are thrilled to have Kelly Flores back as Mamma Sanders in SFC. Kelly hails from St. Louis, Mo. and while she is thrilled to be reviving her role as Vera Sanders, she is normally a director and playwright. She’s directed And Then There Were None, The Musical Comedy Murders of 1940, Poe’s Dreams of Madness, Bye Bye Birdie, The Crucible and Fiddler on the Roof to name a few.

Michale is no stranger to Strauss. He just recently served in Godspell as Jesus. But he is new to the Smoke on the Mountain family and we are certainly excited to call him part of the Sanders
Michael a freshman English major at The University of Louisiana at Monroe. Michael is part of both the ULM Chamber Choir as well as the ULM Concert Choir. He has been actively involved in theater since he can remember, and will continue to pursue it as a hobby/escape for the rest of his life. Michael has graduated from homeschooling and during his high school years was actively involved at SYAA in roles such as: Beast from Beaty and the Beast, Horton from Horton Hears A Who, and Lord Farquaad from Shrek the Musical. He has also been involved with many shows at the Strauss Theatre Center, such as: Freddy Eynsford-Hill from My Fair Lady, and Jesus from Godspell 2012 Revised Version.

Some old-time religion is served up in the show Sanders Family Christmas. The setting is at Mount Pleasant Baptist Church in the North Carolina Appalachians, the pastor, his girlfriend and members of the musically inclined Sanders family gather to sing carols, hymns and holiday tunes. They also pick, grin, tell stories and make you laugh!
The stories are charming and the toe-tapping songs beautifully sung. Even more impressive is the fact that the instruments are played onstage by the cast. Strauss is thankful for Ira Barger. It’s very rare you find the caliber of talent of Ira. He bring a high-level of musicianship to Sanders Family Christmas.
Ira grew up in a musical family in Humphreys County, Mississippi. He is an autodidactic multi-instrumentalist and songwriter with a nearly encyclopedic knowledge of American Traditional and Roots music, especially Blues. He spent his formative years learning his craft from well-known Blues artists in the Mississippi Delta region such as Fat Possum recording artists James “T-Model” Ford and Paul “Wine” Jones. He is known as a highly skilled and dynamic performer who continues to delight and captivate audiences across the Mid-South.

Strauss Dinner Theatre is excited to have Spence Young back in the patriarch role of Burl Sanders in Sanders Family Christmas Dec 5, 6, 7 and 9th. You will remember Spence in Smoke on the Mountain at Strauss.
Spence “accidentally” discovered a love for acting at Ruston Community Theatre in 2013 when he auditioned for a lead role only to help his daughter face her fear of auditioning. His band, “The Fight” actively serves the “recovery” community by providing uplifting, spiritual and worship music for those struggling with addition and the families who love them.
Spence is a natural in the role of Burl Sanders. We are very thankful to Spence for giving of his time and talents for SFC. Spence and his wife Alicia have two children: Alayna and Cameron.
